Truth – Minna Mäkelä, Maria Kausalainen
The works on display in this exhibition are united by reflections on reality as fragile and unfinished, as well as thoughts on final absence. A person is like a burnt-out but still lingering memory in situations that are otherwise full of life. In moments of being lost, we search for points of support from the past, seeking strength from there to navigate difficult situations. At the same time, we begin to sketch an image of ourselves and what truly matters to us.
In our works, people appear in situations where they encounter another person. Often, they are merely present side by side. When the other is absent, either locally or entirely, we may still feel the sense of presence gained through shared years.
Since we are both mothers of young children, signs of parenthood often appear in our works. The process of growing into motherhood follows certain patterns, yet it remains mysterious and ever-changing, much like our understanding of what is true.
But what is a true encounter between people? How do we communicate with each other – do we ever truly meet? Is everything just an illusion, a game within a bubble shaken by the surrounding society, other people, and passing moments?
