Anna Hall: HORSES! & Timo Tolonen – Paintings

Anna Hall: HORSES! April 19 – May 6, 2008.

Visual artist Anna Hall brings the energy of motion and color to the lower level of Poriginal Gallery. Working in Pori, Anna is known for her horse-themed art, which has already been exhibited this year in Oulu and Germany.

In her paintings, the dynamism of movement and vibrancy of color merge to create powerful imagery. According to the artist, studying a horse’s character and anatomy is a lifelong challenge.

Timo Tolonen – Paintings, April 19 – May 6, 2008

I paint somewhat unimaginative landscapes in a fairly conventional style. My paintings are “unimaginative” in the sense that they are based on real situations and experiences in real places—because, in my most alert moments, I am fascinated by the existing world in all its mystery. To me, reality appears more imaginative and nuanced than anything my own imagination could invent.

In terms of style, I aim for clarity and purpose, which has led me to use well-established, even old-fashioned, artistic techniques. This does not mean that I do not value painterly expression for its own sake.

As for subject matter, I cling stubbornly to individual cases. In recent years, these have often included abandoned factories, roadscapes, piles of waste, forgotten graves, and so on. I find them interesting in their own right. I avoid references to broader themes, symbolism, or any so-called spiritual realities. There is only one reality.

For the sake of fairness, I will admit that some broader themes do appear in my work—such as distance in all its meanings, loneliness in car scenes, or, if I paint a forgotten grave, the universal nature of death. However, these should be seen as part of the situation itself, rather than an explanation of it.

I also often include mood in my paintings. I consider it appropriate, as I too experience various emotions, often influenced by the surrounding external reality.

I would like to thank the Cultural Foundation of Pohjois-Savo and the Arts Council of Pohjois-Savo for their support.
