RAIMO TÖRHÖNEN, PÄIVI PUSSILA AND PEKKA HOMANEN

We are an independent group of three visual artists from Oulu. What unites us is a visual approach rooted in the tradition of representational painting, yet with a strong aim towards contemporary art. At the same time, each of us brings a unique perspective and approach, making the whole more interesting.

In terms of content, our works share a desire to capture images that, in an essential way, speak of existence—its randomness, fragility, and beauty.

Pekka Homanen – Paintings

The works in this exhibition began in 2001. The birth of children in my close circle and the tragic images of conflicts around the world stirred deep emotions in me. I wanted to process these feelings in some way. This led to a painting series in which beautiful little children observe war events from a distanced perspective. The child, of course, served as my alter ego. Then, as now, my works juxtapose the small child and the great, evil world.

Unfortunately, I find myself continuing this same series to this day, as the subjects, both globally and locally, show no signs of disappearing. On the contrary, the wheel of the world only spins faster.

Päivi Pussila – Paintings

I have long been fascinated by hands, their meanings, and body language. My works contain references to the history of painting, particularly the late Renaissance.

Dreams and sleeping people intrigue me—something so familiar, yet so strange and close to us all. Some things are recognized more as feelings than as clear thoughts.

My work often touches on vast, all-encompassing themes—death, sorrow, love—which I try to strip of excessive pathos during the creative process. I am interested in exploring deep emotions without falling into sentimentality. Many of my works balance on this fine line.

Raimo Törhönen – Sculptures

I primarily consider myself a painter. However, from time to time, an idea strikes me that does not seem to fit naturally into painting but instead demands a different form of realization.

For this exhibition, I have gathered these “flashes of inspiration”—object sculptures, most of which are from recent years.

These objects often explore the interplay between the physical form of an item—such as a book—and the meanings and concepts associated with it, not forgetting a touch of quiet humor.

On a visual level, I strive for simplicity and clarity, a raw beauty.
