ON THE WAY – Kirsi Backman

My exhibition consists mostly of sculptures and reliefs created during the fall of 2009, made from high-fired ceramics or recycled/scrap metal. A few works from the past couple of years are also included.

Lately, I have been reflecting on various aspects and situations related to life and our journey: growth, breakaways, accepting challenges, taking flight, and the inevitable limitation of time that we all face. Who longs for secure boundaries around them, and who wants to devour life curiously? On the other hand, the sand in the hourglass flows with every second, minute, hour…

I have created my latest works while these themes have been swirling in my thoughts.

Some of the works in the On the Way exhibition have come about spontaneously—without much prior planning. Rusted, abandoned objects have inspired me, and I have allowed associations and insights to guide my thoughts, seeing what new I can create. Using recycled materials in the creation of art has brought joy and a freeing sense of playful madness into my work—something I hope will be conveyed to the viewer as well.

The welding portions of the metal works were carried out by Kai Backman.
