OverFlow – Saija Koponen

The flow of thoughts and sensations converses with the overwhelming intensity of experience. Depicting experience means using the symbols of experience.

The foundations of my work are tied to the unity of body and mind and the language of the body. To thoughts and sensations that move in cycles, like breath and heartbeats. The experiencer lives in this time and its influences, but in painting, I abandon the idea of linear time and narrative progression. A painting is not a story, not a straightforward path from one point to another, nor is it the same at first glance as it is after a moment of calm observation.

Materiality is essential to me. The choice of materials is the first step in creating a content-driven montage: is the mark left by painting, drawing, lace, or casting? The content dictates the form.

Brushstrokes and layers of paint hint at the physicality of painting and the time embedded within it. Form and content momentarily dissolve, only to merge again in a different way—yet always as equals. They move in rhythmic motion, the purest manifestation of embodiment.
