THINGNESS – Janne Nabb and Maria Teeri
The Thingness exhibition is based on observations of interactions and merging between artists and objects. The starting point for the works on display at Poriginal, which are being constructed during the exhibition, is the relationship between the artistic process and automated procedures. It will be revealed how readymade or computer work relates to the human bodily presence and handiwork, and what special things happen at the interfaces. Secondly, it is about painting. A few years ago, we banned ourselves from painting, but we are still looking for various excuses and detours for it. Now we are moving somewhere on the fringes of object-oriented painting: objects are paint, space is the canvas.
The performative laboratory work ongoing during the exhibition illustrates the workflow of processes and procedures in the gallery space step by step. We work from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm and aim to clarify what we mean by chance collage, printing as a painting technique, or corrupted 3D animations. Through partially re-presented, partially immediate work, we try to capture moments where mind and matter dissolve into each other and organize in a new format, independent of their technique.
Janne Nabb (b. 1984) and Maria Teeri (b. 1985) have been working as a duo since 2008. They share all artistic processes, utilizing both of their strengths. Nabb and Teeri work spatially with painting, moving images, text, sound, and found materials. In their works, they particularly explore the relationship of artistic work to everyday life itself, often using traces left by human activity or material surplus as their material. They studied at the Kankaanpää School of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts, from which they graduated in 2011. Over the past year, Nabb and Teeri’s works have been exhibited at the Mänttä Art Festival, Galerie Anhava’s project space in Helsinki, and the Tosi kyseessä collection exhibition at Kiasma. Currently, the duo lives and works in Southeast Helsinki.
