CANCER – Jenni Uusitalo
In Finland, approximately 150 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, with three out of four making a full recovery. Jenni Uusitalo was diagnosed when she was 4 years old. The treatments lasted a year and a half, and the time spent in the hospital has left a lasting impression on her. Childhood memories are reflected in the works in this exhibition. It features a three-part installation created from hospital equipment.
This exhibition is part of Uusitalo’s Master’s thesis in Fine Arts. It also includes a photography exhibition titled CANCER – A Glimpse into Children’s Art Workshops, showcasing a documentary photo series from art workshops that Uusitalo organized for children with cancer and their families in early 2013. The exhibition is currently on display at the Porin Ikkunagalleria until September 20, 2013.
Jenni Uusitalo graduated as a visual artist from Kankaanpää School of Fine Arts in 2011. She is currently studying at Aalto University School of Arts, Design, and Architecture in Pori, where she is exploring the application of the “Color Bath” art workshop method for families of children with cancer as part of her Master’s thesis.
The exhibition is supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland’s Satakunta Arts Council and Satakunta Hospital District. Partners include the Satakunta Cancer Association, the Parents’ Association for Childhood Cancer Patients “Syöpykät,” and the “Kympin lapset” Association.
