The artists for the 2013 scholarship exhibition of Porin Saskiat are two sculptors, Sanna Heikkilä and Aino Mäntynen. Although their works differ greatly from each other, they share a passionate approach to the materials of sculpture.
The opening will be on Friday, September 27, 2013, at 6:00 PM.
The press conference for the exhibition will be on Friday, September 27, 2013, at 12:00 PM at the Poriginal Gallery.

Sanna Heikkilä
Heikkilä is in her final year at Kankaanpää Art School, focusing on sculpture. Having found her direction at Liminka School of Fine Arts, Heikkilä works with a variety of materials using traditional techniques. Wood and metal are her preferred materials as they require patience, an understanding of the material, and versatile craftsmanship. These methods demand time, but the sculptor finds peace and focus in physical work, which allows her to channel emotions and stories into her creations.

Aino Mäntynen

“Material is the central starting point of my work as a sculptor. When working with different materials, I get a feel for their essence, their language and voice.
We humans have the ability to create countless associations based on our imaginations and feelings toward a material. We constantly use expressions where we intertwine the concept with the material. Words connect matter and idea, making them real.
‘One Space’ is my attempt to build silence.
In my works, I want the transition from one material to another to appear as a natural process. How the material leads me through the combination I’ve discovered toward something new. Ash has played a key role in my work recently: initially only a part of my pieces, but later becoming my sole raw material.
I do not have a grand ideology behind my works, nor am I trying to present views that aim to change the world. My works are a depiction of the world I see.”
