FORCED/FREE – Anna-Leena Soini and Mari Syren

Jewelry and Artworks

Anna-Leena Soini’s works, created between 2011 and 2013, primarily consist of silver jewelry and pinecone sculptures. Some of the jewelry pieces are unique, while others are part of small series. The Cupla jewelry is made by forcing round silver plates into semi-spheres and soldering them together. One “bubble” serves as the building block for the pieces, forming different shapes.

The pinecone sculptures are from 2011-2012. The material became compelling when the first pinecone work, Heart Pinecone, was created. After that, Two in One was made, where both sides of the pinecone are revealed, depicting the yin & yang symbol. The exhibition also features smaller pinecone sculptures.

Mari Syren’s works are all new, from 2013. The exhibition showcases large, unique jewelry pieces: sculptures for the body. The jewelry is made primarily of silver using Syren’s signature wire technique, which allows for a light, yet striking and durable structure.

Both jewelry designers have participated in numerous domestic and international exhibitions, in addition to their own solo shows. Mari Syren’s piece “The Memory of Your Hands” was featured in exhibitions in both Lithuania and Poland this year. Syren’s jewelry “Mother Earth” is displayed at the Design Museum in Helsinki as part of a permanent exhibition of Finnish jewelry art and was included in the 2012 book Koru Suomessa (Jewelry in Finland).

Soini’s jewelry was featured in the 2015 edition of Showcase 500 Art Necklaces published in the USA.
