Passing / Birds of a Feather – Salla Salin

*”I hear the rustling of wings.

Even though I know that sound is not listed in the materials of the artwork.”*
— J. Stiegele (viewer experience)

Passing / Birds of a Feather is an installation that invites the viewer to step into the midst of a passing flock of birds. In the work, time, gravity, architecture, nature, and human senses engage in a dialogue, with pauses filled with thought.

Salla Salin works across various mediums, including installations, sculpture, performances, and interdisciplinary projects. Her work primarily explores the relationship between human perception and the surrounding world. Salin’s artistic practice is characterized by a multimedia approach—rather than focusing on a specific technique or material, she prioritizes the initial concept of the work and its development through research and experimentation.

As a result, the materials of her works are always chosen in relation to the subject matter, ranging from the human body to light, sound, and moving images. Her pieces are often large in scale—spaces and situations where the viewer’s physical presence and movement become an integral part of the work.

Salin lives and works in Helsinki. Her works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions as well as at festivals both in Finland and internationally.
