IMMERSION – Alpo Nummelin & Jenni Yppärilä

The IMMERSION exhibition consists of three-dimensional paintings and two video works titled “Drummers” and “Immersion.”

The video works explore the aesthetics of facial expressions and body movements within the context of music. The three-dimensional paintings depict places where music, musicians, and audiences meet. Alpo Nummelin (b. 1986, Pori) and Jenni Yppärilä (b. 1980, Oulainen) aim to combine the roles of observer and experiencer in their collaborative works. They are interested in giving the audience the opportunity to participate in the artwork rather than just being passive viewers. In the “Drummers” piece, the viewer gets to play the drums as part of an interactive installation.

Nummelin’s artistic practice includes light and sound installations. He graduated with a degree in Media from Tampere University of Applied Sciences, specializing in Light Expression. His works have been exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, including the “Marshmallow” themed exhibition at Haihara Art Center in 2012 and the “Space Invaders II” invitational exhibition in Pori in 2014. Additionally, he works internationally as a light and sound designer, musician, and instructor of experimental sound workshops for children and youth.

Yppärilä’s work includes three-dimensional paintings as well as video and sound installations. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the Pori School of Art and Media at Aalto University. Her works have been exhibited at the Mänttä Art Festival, the “Artists 2012” exhibition at the Helsinki Art Hall, and numerous solo exhibitions. Yppärilä’s works are included in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Pori Art Museum, and the Oulu Art Museum.
