My approach to art is material-based. My technique is linked to the traditions of material-based art, but the works also clearly connect with the traditions of community art, sculpture, and conceptual art. The material itself can be a message, not just a part of the expression. I am interested in rhythm and repetition. The works consist of dozens, even hundreds, of small components. The slowness of the technique becomes part of the content of the pieces.

As a textile artist, I am used to working at the surface level, but by daringly adding sculptural features to my works, I have ventured into the great unknown in terms of both my own skills and the assumed experience of the viewer. The familiarity of the textile often evokes confusion in the art’s recipient. Can an old cotton rag be raw material for art? And when a shape is created from this material—soft, curving, clumsy, or human—the everyday nature of it hits you in the face.

The works on display at Poriginal Gallery were created between 2014 and 2015. I have used found, worthless material as the raw material for my works, those scraps that no one else wants. The process is not entirely visible to the viewer: washing, ironing, mending, sorting, and reassembling.

Textile materials and discarded objects refer to everyday life and fleeting, insignificant moments, but they also contain surreal elements and cultural associations—or small amused remarks. Currently, I am working with the annual grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. I have exhibited in group shows both abroad and in Finland and have held solo exhibitions since 1999. My works are in the collections of several museums and the state art collection. In addition to my artistic work, I have worked as a curator and in teaching and expert roles in the field.
