JURY 2017 – Henna Tyrväinen, Katariina Mannio, Tea Söderlund
The Pori Art Museum invited associations representing professional artists from Satakunta to select representatives for the Poriginal Gallery’s exhibition selection committee for 2017. From the artist associations, the committee members selected were Katariina Mannio (Rauma Art Printmakers), Henna Tyrväinen (NYTE ry), and Tea Söderlund (Pori Artists’ Association). The other members of the committee were the director of the Pori Art Museum and the curator of Poriginal Gallery.
The 2017 exhibition program at Poriginal Gallery begins with a joint exhibition by visual artists representing Satakunta’s artist associations.
Katariina Mannio creates woodcuts, sometimes incorporating linocut. She hand-pulls the prints on Japanese paper in small editions or as single prints. Her residency work in Spain and a trip to Morocco had a lasting impact on her. “Since then, I’ve been working on a theme that combines Islamic ornamentation, people, and places. Between 2014 and 2015, I created a series of architectural highlights from the Middle East, and now I’ve also returned to themes of people.”
Through her new works, Mannio also addresses contemporary political conflicts and wars, comparing them to Islamic architecture and visual traditions. The series includes people engaged in everyday activities, young rebels, and soldiers with weapons, on the run and in battle.
Katariina Mannio (born 1979) is a visual artist and printmaker from Rauma. She graduated from the Kankaanpää School of Fine Arts and studied at the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts. Mannio has actively exhibited in solo shows, with works displayed, for example, in Kyoto as part of the Kyoto International Art Festival. She is a member of the Finnish Association of Printmakers and the Rauma Art Printmakers Association.
Henna Tyrväinen (born 1987 in Pieksämäki) is a visual artist based in Pori, working primarily in graphic art, photography, and installation, often combining these mediums. The themes and starting points of her work range from melancholy to overflowing kitsch, from the environment—both nature and urban landscapes—to political and feminist perspectives.
Tyrväinen graduated as a visual artist from the Kankaanpää School of Fine Arts in 2011 and completed her Master’s degree in Visual Culture at Aalto University in 2014.
Tea Söderlund (born 1976 in Helsinki) is a visual artist and multidisciplinary cultural worker based in Pori. She has actively worked as a visual artist and held several solo and group exhibitions both in Finland and internationally.
Recent exhibitions have focused on themes related to individual identity, roles, and norms. Conceptual works often form as assemblages created from accumulated recycled materials, such as newspapers, dolls, and candy wrappers. Material choices are also part of the content of the works.
