THE SILENT REBELLION OF THE EARTH – Sampsa Sarparanta
In my latest works, I continue to depict the individual’s role in the midst of digitalization, constant cuts, right-wing governments, global capitalism, social media, and the bombardment of hate speech.
Sampsa Sarparanta
Sampsa Sarparanta (born 1973) has held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Finland and abroad during his 20-year artist career. His works are included in collections such as those of the Kiasma Museum, the Turku City Museum, and the Salon Art Museum. Sarparanta’s paintings are direct and often politically charged and provocative. His subjects have included famine in Sudan and workers laid off from the Leaf factory in Turku, as well as portraits and everyday glimpses from the artist’s close circle. The Helsingin Sanomat newspaper called Sarparanta a brilliant portrayer of the wonderful horror of everyday life (December 2011). Sarparanta studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. He lives and works in his studio in Perniö. In 2004, he was selected as the Young Artist of the Art Centre Salmela. Sarparanta is also known for being the lead singer and songwriter of the punk band No Shame.
“Sarparanta continues the tradition of realism represented by the great masters of the golden age, especially Albert Edelfelt, but adds a hefty dose of punk attitude. Sarparanta is quickly rising to the top of the small group of Finnish photorealists.” – Helsingin Sanomat, May 2014
