HERMIT – Sebastian Lindberg

The Hermit exhibition is based on processing a transcendental experience of nature through painting. The works can be seen as a symbolic commentary on humanity’s utilitarian relationship with nature.

In my paintings, I observe landscapes and explore abandoned structures that nature gradually reshapes. I am intrigued by the traces left by erosion and vegetation on man-made surfaces, and how nature reclaims environments altered by human hands. In some of my works, I depict this process of erosion using a technique where I press and pour paint while tilting the canvas, allowing gravity to contribute to the visual language of the paintings. In addition to direct observation of nature, I have drawn inspiration from the tradition of landscape painting, spanning from the Renaissance through Symbolism to contemporary art.

These paintings continue a kind of vanitas theme that I have been developing since 2012.
