THE NATURE OF A SHELL – Tanja Koistila

The purpose of a shell is to protect, cover, and hold together to varying degrees. A shell can be subtle, nearly invisible, or a completely separate entity. Its structure may be layered or simple. The characteristics that define a shell’s functionality can range from clearly defined to merely suggestive.

I am drawn to words and definitions—those that hold multiple meanings, can be used in various contexts, and serve as descriptions of both materiality and content.

I have studied visual arts at the Academy of Fine Arts and Turku University of Applied Sciences, Arts Academy of TUAS. My work primarily involves sculpture, installation, performance, and video art.
