PORI ART MUSEUM´S INVITATION EXHIBITION – Emili Hellman, Jussi Matilainen

Pori Art Museum’s Invitational Exhibition
Emili Hellman and Jussi Matilainen at Poriginal Gallery

Pori Art Museum is launching a series of invitational exhibitions featuring artists from the Satakunta region at Poriginal Gallery.

The first exhibition in the series, presented in July 2020, showcases works by Emili Hellman and Jussi Matilainen.

For this inaugural exhibition, Pori Art Museum invited visual artist Jussi Matilainen (b. 1979), who has been actively involved in artist collectives T.E.H.D.A.S. ry and MVET for many years, often presenting work at the museum through these projects. Alongside his collective work, Matilainen has also pursued an independent artistic practice. As part of the curatorial process, he was asked to propose a younger-generation artist for the exhibition. Based on his suggestion, visual artist Emili Hellman (b. 1995) was invited to participate. Hellman is currently studying at Kankaanpää School of Fine Arts. The exhibition features new works from both artists.

Jussi Matilainen presents the video work Goldilocks, a reinterpretation of the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy. The narrative unfolds in the sweltering heat of summer, with a voiceover that reveals its motives sparingly. While the story arc is completed by the end of the piece, the question of guilt and innocence remains unresolved. The video also features a bear character familiar from Matilainen’s and T.E.H.D.A.S. ry‘s projects. Matilainen works with performance art, video art, and painting. He also teaches visual arts at Kankaanpää Art School.

Emili Hellman creates a sculptural work for the upper floor of Poriginal Gallery. Her creative process is driven by chance encounters with materials and objects, which she assembles into compositions. The interaction with diverse materials shapes the final outcome. Hellman draws inspiration from fleeting moments, different spaces, and sounds, weaving these elements into a representation of memory.

The aim of the invitational exhibition series is to support the work of regional artists and introduce their work to the public. The series is part of Pori Art Museum’s role as the regional responsibility museum for Satakunta.
