JURY 2021 – Júlia Kovacs, Annemaria Silvola, Anu Sukanen
The 2021 Jury is exceptionally presented in July at Poriginal Gallery with a joint exhibition by three artists from Satakunta. The artists represent three local artist associations, and their task was to peer-review the applications received at Poriginal Gallery in October 2020 concerning the exhibition times for the upcoming year 2021. The exhibition, held in July, was postponed from January due to pandemic restrictions, allowing the jury to personally experience the uncertainty of exhibition times during the corona era and how the contemporary art offerings in Satakunta adapt and function under exceptional circumstances.
JULIA KOVÁCS HAAVISTO (Art Association NYTE)
I am Hungarian from Romania but I have been living and studying arts in Portugal for the last 16 years…. Now… I am living and practicing my art in Pori, Finland. We live in modern times where everything is so fleeting and there is hardly room to appreciate the simple aesthetic and artistic experiences that life in its generosity gives us. Through my performances I seek to find more genuine ways of communicating and connecting with others by challenging my routine and the routine of those around me. I also search to honor human uniqueness by exploring how similar yet how different we are. We all have our unique stories yet we are all built by human bricks.
ANNEMARIA SILVOLA (Pori Society of Artists)
I am an artist and art educator from Pori. In the exhibition, I present my works that deal with various unwanted things and themes brought to light by the restrictions of recent years. Who or what is a wanted or unwanted guest? When the world is limited to one’s own yard and mobility is restricted to meters with aids, what does the world look like up close, does the longing to leave grow? Childlike wonder, curiosity, and open-mindedness speak to me. The exhibition includes paintings, ceramics, and photographs.
ANU SUKANEN (Rauma Printmakers Association)
I have been making art for over 20 years. The central themes of my art have always been nature, humanity, and peace. The importance of these things has been emphasized by the current state of the world. The most important thing we can give each other is presence and being seen. My works are sculptures combining ceramics and wood, textile works, and installed performances. Some of the works can also be touched. The Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) has supported my work with a 1.5-month corona grant.
