MYTOLOGIA – Jan Neva
About the Content of My Paintings:
In my paintings, I depict the historical layers of time, but also the transience of being human. In my works, I reflect the events of our time through mythologies. Mentalities, the foundational structures of worldviews, and images are long-lasting. The archetypes of great stories have traversed many cultural phases. In many cases, they still function today as emotionally evocative images, even if they have lost their cognitive dimension. For example, the character of Kullervo is an archetype of a mass murderer whose childhood deviation ruins his entire life in a horrific way. We constantly read similar stories in our time, such as in terrorist attacks. Mythologies are full of these archetypes and thus form an interesting part of the world’s explanation. Great destructions, such as diseases and climate change, also appear in epics as sudden deteriorations of living conditions. I depict the world that lies behind the current worldview and understanding of life. In my works, I want to highlight the relentless nature of time: ultimately, material reality disintegrates into dust, and everything disappears into the great unknown of time.
