WORKS FROM THIS WORLD – Laura Lehenkari

I give different things a form, a different one than they might have had before. I try to imagine what worry looks like, or that fleeting moment of happiness when everything is fine for a while. How to conceptualize a climate disaster or a pandemic?

When I get an idea, I move into a virtual three-dimensional world to play and search for the right shape. I draw and shape, sometimes for days, sometimes for weeks. Finally, I slice the model. Then I print, cut, and tape paper, from which I transfer the stencil onto a wooden board. I saw, drill holes, sand, and paint. I attach the fittings, take a picture. I hang the work on the wall and move on to the next one. Many things are still waiting to be imagined and shaped. Next time then.

Laura Lehenkari studied at Kankaanpää School of Fine Arts(2001-05) and the University of Turku (2016-18). Her previous exhibition at Poriginal Gallery was 10 years ago. Lehenkari has created several public works in the Pori area, such as “Meadow” in front of the Children’s and Women’s House at Satakunta Central Hospital, and “Poritiisi” at the Porttaali underpass. Other works are in private and public collections.

The exhibition has been supported by the Satakunta Cultural Foundation and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike).
