CONCRETE BED – Mimosa Isomäki
Take a rest on this concrete bed
does your bed feel smooth like paper
or is it rough
what is it made of
are there bricks on it
maybe
bent metal plates
loose screws
or is it firm polished sturdy
is your bed under a bright sky
or is it dark foggy
is it cold warm
is it clean or
does the built up dirt create shapes
on the wall on the ground on the windows
what sounds are there listen or is isilent
is your concrete bed alive does your bed think
what is it thinking does it feel pain
And you
are you calm
uneasy
interested?
Mimosa Isomäki (b.1999) is a Helsinki-based visual artist who draws material for her work by examining the city in transition, its surface and subsurface phenomena, and the structures and processes that emerge beneath the surface. He works mainly in oil painting, also using drawing, collage and found objects in his work. The forms of the things represented in the paintings melt together, coming to life and layering, ultimately telling the story of a man navigating the contemporary world of faded memories and confused emotions.
Through the works in the exhibition, Isomäki ponders questions related to the sensory overload of the built urban environment and, on the other hand, to resilience and calming the nervous system through making and experiencing art. Isomäki graduated from the Free art school in Helsinki in 2023, focusing on painting. ‘Concrete bed’ is Isomäki’s first solo exhibition after graduation.
