Watercolor painting is highly popular and of a high standard in Latvia. It has remained vibrant and diverse even through challenging times. This exhibition presents a total of 34 works by 12 artists.
The participating artists include Janis Spalvins with four works; Jekabs Spingis, Irena Luse, Helena Heinrihsone, Pauls Liepa, Inese Silina, Vilis Vizulis, Gunar Krollis, and Ieva Spalvina with three works each; and Ilze Preisa, Dzemma Skulme, and Dainis Gudovskis with two works each.
Most of the pieces were previously exhibited in the Baltic Watercolour Triennial, an international watercolor exhibition held in 2001 at the Arsenal Art Hall in Riga. The triennial was curated by Janis Spalvins, who is also responsible for curating this exhibition in Pori.
All the featured artists are members of the Latvian Artists’ Union and have received their education at the Latvian Academy of Arts. Each has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions both in Latvia and internationally.
The youngest artist in the exhibition, Paulis Liepa, was born in 1978, while the oldest, Jekabs Spingis, was born in 1907.
