Traces of Life – Kirsi Backman
The fragile, corroded, and rusted nails that once traveled the stormy seas of the world enchanted me with their rawness. These nails began to live a new life when combined with ceramics. I also became fascinated by other rusted objects and allowed space for spontaneous associations…
On the other hand, I have also pondered how life leaves its marks on us as humans—what each of us has to experience and go through—and how we survive under difficulty. Do we hide things in the labyrinths of our subconscious that we cannot process? Do these hidden things govern our behavior unconsciously? Do we allow space for our instincts, and do we understand our dreams, which may be trying to guide us?
The works in the upper gallery were mostly created this fall, although some of the rusted nails have been waiting for their new life since the previous summer.
I have used high-fired clay as the material, which I have partially glazed with green glaze. For the sculptures, I have aimed to create a sense of airiness, using metal stands crafted by my husband, Kai Backman.
I hope that my works leave even a small trace in your inner being…
