EVERYDAY LIFE – Jone Mutka

Jone Mutka’s solo exhibition EVERYDAY LIFE refers both to the materials used in the works and to the themes they explore, ranging from the monotony of the present-day routine to the nostalgia of childhood.

The exhibition consists of printmaking, sculptures, and installations. Many of the works originate from discarded materials and waste encountered in Mutka’s daily life, from recycled paper to fruit mesh bags. Over the course of a year, he has collected these materials from himself and his close circle to create the pieces.

In the artworks, one can recognize familiar everyday objects and moments from ordinary life. However, rather than serving as documentation, the works act as imitations and preserved memories of lived experiences.

While creating the works for this exhibition, Mutka has combined traditional printmaking and visual art techniques with more experimental approaches to contemporary art. For instance, in the piece Piece of Faith, the woodcut printing block has been cut using a laser cutter, allowing it to be assembled and printed in endless variations. Meanwhile, in Decals, plaster-cast sculptures of the artist’s body feature photographic imagery applied like decals, using a UV printer.

Jone Mutka (b. 1993, Kitee) is a Turku-based visual artist and printmaker specializing in screen printing, installations, and digital techniques, including image manipulation and laser engraving. In addition to the EVERYDAY LIFE theme, his recent work has explored the relationship between humans and machines, as well as the concept of paradise.
