(HEDELMÄLLINEN PUOLIKUU) FERTILE CRESCENT

MEDIA RELEASE

Agriculture began in the mountainous region of the Middle East in the so-called Fertile Crescent, and in all the major river valleys independently of each other at almost the same time (Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China) – the high cultures of the river valleys. Throughout history, climate change has required humans to adapt to changing natural conditions. With the disappearance of game, there had to be a shift from game farming to agriculture, which at the same time tied people to fixed dwellings (creating the conditions for population growth). *With agriculture came the need to develop tools and methods, technology evolved. River…Water…Seed…Culture. *(World of Change 1 and 2 Publishing Wedge). The advent of agriculture allowed culture to develop and spread even further. The settling down of settlement, in turn, allowed the continuity represented by the grain symbolism. Continuity is therefore a key factor and is even more important in EU Finland, where the power to make grain new is still needed. I approach the subject in my paintings in a ballad-like way, telling the story of the book carved into the rock, memories revolving around a chain of grains – the grey door of the board, a piece of wall paper, the story of the blue grain. A seed’s journey through the ages – giving nourishment, creating stories, creating culture in our midst. River…Water…Seed…Culture – an unbreakable bond, a chain of grains – the seed of the new millennium.
