HuoneetRooms – Minna Hagman

Sound and video installation

The starting point for this work was the desire to explore how ordinary, different rooms resonate; does each room have its own tone, its own way of resonating?

I have selected six rooms that are part of my close circle. Using a contact microphone attached to the walls, I recorded the sounds of the walls, ceilings, and floors of these rooms. The microphone functions somewhat like a doctor’s stethoscope, used to listen to the heart and lungs. With its help, I was able to capture the sounds coming from within the walls and how the walls, ceilings, and floors vibrate in response to sound.

From the recorded sounds, I have created compositions, some of which resemble short minimalist “melodies,” while others are freer in structure.

In addition, I filmed close-ups of the walls, ceilings, and floors of these same rooms with a video camera. I edited the images according to the sounds, so that the visuals correspond to the sound of whichever wall, ceiling, or floor is resonating—sometimes even overlapping.

The video images are projected onto the walls of the exhibition space. The sounds are listened to through headphones, creating the impression of hearing from within the walls.
