INNOCENCE – Mari Isotalo
My exhibition consists of works created between 2009 and 2010, where the central themes are childhood, girlhood, growing up, breaking boundaries, the tearing expectations of the environment, and innocence. Being the mother of two young girls has given me an excellent vantage point on all these phenomena. At times, it has been an honor; at times, a burden.
At a quick glance, my works may seem sunny, pleasant, overflowing with innocence and beauty. However, a closer look reveals numerous layers, nuances, contradictions, and even darker tones; the seemingly innocent child may have done something forbidden, the carefree childhood game might actually be a conscious and unconscious preparation for a harsh world. Children are not stagnant, unchanging objects, but personalities in their own right—independent thinkers and feeling beings. Children are both wonderful and terrible at the same time.
I graduated from Kankaanpää School of Fine Arts in 2002.
