Paintings and Sculptures

Eija Lahtinen (born 1953, Kauhava)

I paint on fabric and use mixed media techniques. My current mixed media works resemble paintings more than my earlier paintings ever did.

I especially enjoy browsing flea markets, where I search for materials for my works. I prefer to use materials that have already had a previous life.

I am fascinated by grids and stripes—right now, particularly the intersections of lines and stripes, which is reflected in this exhibition.

Markku Mäntyniemi (born 1953, Kauhava, lives in Nurmo)

I create art through painting and sculpting. My aim is to explore and reflect on the origins of humankind, especially its mystical aspects. In my works, I highlight the symbolic meanings that arise from metaphors.

Humanity’s growing desire for material wealth—at the expense of nature—stands in stark contrast to the deep awareness of the wrongness of these choices. At the same time, the difficulty of seeking change has been made even greater in this rapidly accelerating global and materialistic turmoil.

In a small way, my artistic practice serves as a statement on these contradictions.
