Paintings, Sculptures, Installation, and Video Art – Taru Anttila, Mailis Saralehto
TARU ANTTILA
Born in 1975, lives and works in Pori.
The narrative paintings created during the summer of 2001 share common external elements such as clear color surfaces with decorative elements, and human figures. Initially, the central theme of the works was “criticism” of human attempts to shape the natural order (cloning, etc.), but the summer heatwaves and sunstrokes caused the theme to shift toward human relationships.
Serious, yet not too serious…
MAILIS SARALEHTO
Born in 1976 in Pori.
Hidden Nature
I have brought sculptures, an installation, and a video work to the Poriginal Gallery.
The works follow an organic, albeit vague, form in many ways. The exhibition deals with a kind of in-between space that arises from the tensions between different elements. These can be physical objects or emotional states; the essential thing is that the viewer makes their own decisions. The works are open to all kinds of interpretations.
I examine the blending of beauty and ugliness through different materials. In my sculptures, I have combined various plastics over the past few years, such as multi-colored cellophane and plastic trash bags, as well as animal materials, including cow intestines. I have been photographing flour beetles for a couple of years, and the works created from them have their place in this exhibition as well. A characteristic of my working process and works is repetition and organic reoccurrence.
I graduated as a visual artist from Pori Art School in the fall of 1999. Currently, I live and work in Turku and am studying at the University of Turku.
