Offset Lithographs and Photographic Prints – Juha Kyllönen

The images leaning against the shelves on the wall are like objects, not graphics which are often seen framed under glass. They are altar-like images of dreams, weaknesses, and hedonism.

The works are offset lithographs and photographic prints on black paper. Some of the latest prints also feature sewn line drawings.

Religious background, sexuality, and other personal elements are present in the images. The subjects are not treated entirely seriously; behind the darkly beautiful works, there is a sense of irony.

The mood takes precedence in the images, which feel like fragments of a film. Cinematic storytelling is an important aspect both content-wise and visually, as is the aim to find beauty even in difficult subjects.

My art contains references to the world of advertising, Gallen-Kallela, religious art, and Mapplethorpe. However, I haven’t recreated Elisabeth Ohlson’s Ecce Homo, but rather created a body of work that draws from my own history and background.

Some people keep a diary or write poetry about their feelings, but I have ended up telling stories through images.
