POPULATION – Rosa Kansala
Visual artist Rosa Kansala comes from Joensuu and lives in Rovaniemi. Her sculptures move between figurative and non-figurative art, exploring the forms of nature and different levels of living. Attention is focused on seemingly obvious details, because beauty is sometimes hidden from view. The goal is to stimulate the exhibition visitors´ senses and inspire an exploratory movement around the works.
In some of the sculptures, the surfaces are turned inside out: There are interesting surface structures on the inner surfaces of the work, which can be explored through the holes in the works. Building the works is a slow, layer-by-layer craft. The work is influenced by neomaterialist and posthumanist thinking: people cannot and should not determine and control everything. The form is built based on sketches and experiments, but always as a collaboration between the artist and the material.
The Finnish Cultural Foundation has supported the making of this exhibition.
