PORI ART SCHOOL GRADUATION EXHIBITION

Katri Hakola
Changes

The red thread running through my final project, consisting of a series of paintings and a video work, is the presence of change in the artworks. Change is evident, for instance, in the detachment from cultural symbols and the reversal of ritual in my video works, such as Makedown. In my paintings, I explore change both as a material and conceptual event. A material used in the paintings, such as pantyhose, transforms in its external appearance, while simultaneously connecting the works to conceptuality. With pantyhose, the nature of the painting also becomes more spatial.

Home

My work explores the relationship between humans and pets, as well as the nature of animals and their relationship to their environment. The title Home refers precisely to these relationships and the conflicts between humans, animals, and shared space. For this reason, the work is constructed as a spatial whole, consisting of a series of small oil paintings and graphic prints, all depicting pet rabbits. I have also incorporated household objects into the work, which emphasize its intimacy and invite the viewer to interact with the pieces.

In the work I present as my final project, I address questions of identity. The self-image in my work is shaped both historically and as a temporal continuum into the future. This is conveyed through the various painting techniques in the work, from oil paintings on canvas to spray paintings on the gallery wall. The work is ever-changing. The spray paintings, which I create during the exhibition setup, cover the self-portrait paintings previously made on canvas. As the exhibition concludes, some of my works disappear. The painted portion on the wall will remain in the gallery, while the other parts will continue to the next exhibition, where they will be reconstructed.

Janne Nytorp
Immaterial

In the painting series I present as my final project, my focus is on the human being, which I examine as a “transcendent,” fragile mental entity. I aim to depict this through the translucency created by thin layers of glaze and the overlap of elements.

The plywood surface, which also acts as a visual element by partially appearing as a background next to the painting structures, helps create the impression of movement in my paintings and expresses the development of the viewer’s perspective.
