Soundwalk: Sounds in Power – Janne Raappana

The Soundwalk: Sounds in Power exhibition combines soundscapes recorded during soundwalks with painted images. The exhibition explores the relationship between sound and image, the dominance of sound over image, their interactions, and the disturbing nature of human-made sounds in nature or urban environments.

The recordings were made in Oulu, Pori, and Syöte National Park during 2020 – 2021. The soundscapes have been minimally edited and brought into the gallery space almost as they are, yet combining different cities and nature together. Recordings were made, for example, at Oulu Market Square during the state of emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Soundwalk is a method introduced by R. Murray Schafer (1933 – 2021) to observe the environment primarily through sound: “… any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment. It is exposing our ears to every sound around us no matter where we are.”
