VIIRAA – Maila Malm

My works are sculptures and installations made from recycled materials.

I have used, among other things, denim fabric and plastic food packaging in my pieces.

The colorful packaging brings vibrancy to everyday life. We are so accustomed to the appearance of brand logos that we can recognize them even when they are fragmented. They point to humanity’s need to collect, and at the same time, to waste and the disposable culture.

The troughs and denim hides made from denim fabric refer to a bygone world. Denim is a democratic material of modern times, accessible to everyone. As a material for the trough and hide, it humorously brings the present into the work.

I am interested in the old craft tradition, which is why I have sewn most of my works. The choice of material brings a contrast and contradiction to the subject.
